United Spirits Limited, reported 19% decline in net profit to Rs 118 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, 2013 compared to Rs 145 crore reported in the corresponding quarter last fiscal. Net sales for the quarter went up Rs 6.5% to Rs 2,207 crore. The operating profit for the quarter witnessed a decline of 16.5% to Rs 293 crore.

Bank of Baroda reported a marginal 2.5% rise in net profit at Rs 1,167.87 crore for the first quarter ended June 30, 2013. The bank had posted a net profit of Rs 1,138.86 crore in the same quarter (April-June) of 2012-13.

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) auto sales fell 21.17% to 37,096 vehicles in July, compared with 47,059 units sold during the same month a year ago. The company’s passenger vehicles segment sales fell to 15,530 units during the month under review, as against 22,011 vehicles sold in July 2012. Its domestic sales stood at 34,490 units in July 2013, as against 42,799 units during July 2012.


The HSBC Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), edged down to 50.1 in July from 50.3 in May. The index, which gauges business activity in Indian factories but not its utilities, has been running close to the 50 mark that separates growth from contraction since May, but has held above it for over four years.

Key benchmark indices edged lower after witnessing high intraday volatility. The market surged in early trade on firm Asian stocks. High volatility was witnessed as key benchmark indices reversed strong initial gains after the results of HSBC PMI data showed that slowdown in factory activity deepened last month. Shares of Financial Technologies crashed after the National Spot Exchange said it has suspended trading of contracts, other than e-Series contracts till further notice. The market breadth was weak.
