  • Gold surged after India’s Finance Minister Arun Jaitley confounded industry expectations for a reduction in import duty.
  • Indian govt., in its annual budget said to the government will introduce Gold Monetization Scheme which will enable investors to deploy their gold and earn interest, which was not possible earlier.
  • In the Union Budget, the FM proposed Forward Markets Commission (FMC) to be merged with SEBI, capital market regulator. SEBI’s autonomous functioning and its ability to respond quickly to a crisis should instil confidence in commodity investors.
  • The People's Bank of China cut its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point to 5.35%. It was the second rate cut in less than four months, indicating that Beijing is becoming more aggressive in supporting the economy as its momentum slows and deflation risks rise.
