  • Russia will face fresh sanctions from the EU if a deal to end the Ukraine war is not fully implemented, German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned last week. She said EU leaders had asked officials to prepare further sanctions in case an agreed ceasefire was not respected. The leaders of Russia, Ukraine, Germany and France sealed a deal last week over ceasefire in the in eastern Ukraine region.
  •  Greece's new leftist government and its international creditors failed to agree on a way forward on the country's unpopular bailout and will try again on Feb 15, with time running out for a financing deal.
  •  The European Central Bank extended its liquidity support of about 5 billion euros for Greek banks, but the fate of Greece's international bailout deal still remains uncertain.
  •  The global gold demand in 2014 declined marginally by 4 per cent to 3,924 tonnes compared to the previous year even though 2013 was an outstanding year where the consumer demand had reached a record high.
  •  China’s exports fell 3.3 per cent in January from a year earlier, while imports slumped by 19.9 per cent, according to data released by the Customs Ad-ministration, as China’s manufacturing sector is under great pressure as both external and domestic demand remains sluggish.
