Atal Pension Yojana Calculator
An Atal Pension Yojana calculator uses your current age and desired pension amount to determine the exact monthly amount you need to set aside until you turn 60. For workers in the unorganised sector seeking a fixed, government backed pension without market exposure, the Atal Pension calculator provides a straightforward way to plan the required contribution. What Is an Atal Pension Yojana Calculator
The Atal Pension Yojana, or APY, is a government pension scheme run by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority. The Atal Pension Yojana calculator needs two inputs: your current age, which must fall between 18 and 40 at joining, and the pension you want after age 60, chosen from five fixed slabs, ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, ₹4,000, or ₹5,000. From these two inputs, the calculator returns the exact contribution required, paid monthly, quarterly, or half yearly, until you turn 60.How the Contribution Is Determined
Unlike a market linked scheme, APY does not use a growth formula where the subscriber can influence the outcome. The pension amount is predetermined based on the subscriber’s age and contribution amount. PFRDA fixes a contribution table that links entry age to each pension slab. Join at 18 for a ₹5,000 monthly pension, and the contribution is around ₹210 a month. At 30, the same pension needs about ₹577 a month. At 39, near the upper limit of the entry window, the contribution rises to about ₹1,318 a month for the identical pension. An Atal Pension Yojana calculator uses a fixed government table, not assumed returns. This is a key difference from an NPS or mutual fund calculator. Why Age at Entry Matters So Much
Join early, and the accumulation period stretches out, which lowers the required monthly contribution sharply for the same guaranteed pension. Age at entry matters more here than any investment return assumption, since APY provides a minimum guaranteed pension based on the chosen slab and prescribed contributions.Eligibility and Key Rules
APY is open to Indian citizens aged 18 to 40 with an active savings bank account. Since October 2022, income tax payers cannot newly join the scheme. The chosen pension slab can be raised or lowered once a year, usually in April. If the subscriber dies, the spouse keeps receiving the same pension for life, and if the spouse also dies, the nominee gets the remaining corpus. The Union Cabinet has extended the scheme through FY 2030-31.Tax Treatment of APY
An APY pension calculator is useful alongside tax planning, since contributions qualify for a deduction. Under the Income Tax Act, 2025, effective from Tax Year 2026-27 onward, Section 80C moved to Section 123 and Section 80CCD moved to Section 124. The deduction limits remain unchanged: ₹1.5 lakh under Section 123 and an additional ₹50,000 under Section 124. Once the pension starts after 60, it is fully taxable as regular income at your slab rate, with no exemption at that stage.Who Should Invest in APY
The scheme is designed for workers who have no formal employer pension:- Daily wage earners and domestic workers
- Drivers, small shop owners, and farmers
- Self employed individuals with an active savings bank account
