As per government regulations, if your PAN is not linked with Aadhaar, then your PAN will become inoperative and you will not be able to file your ITR and will not be able to perform other financial transactions where PAN is mandatory. Below are few reasons why you should link PAN with Aadhaar –

  • Audit trail as a means to end fraud
  • Eliminating multiple PAN cards
  • Easy filing of returns
  • Organised information on taxes
The Income Tax department has made it mandatory for everyone to link their Aadhaar card with PAN card. However, the rule presently does not apply to the below categories –

  • Residing in the States of Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, and Meghalaya;
  • a non-resident as per the Income-tax Act, 1961;
  • of the age of eighty years or more at any time during the previous year; or
  • not a citizen of India.
If your PAN and Aadhaar is not linked, your PAN will become inoperative and you will not be able to file ITR. moreover, pending returns will also not be processed.
Step 1 – Click on Link Aadhaar in Quick Links section on e-filing website. Alternatively, login to e-filing portal and Click on Link Aadhar in Profile Section.
Step 2 – Enter your PAN and Aadhaar number.
Step 3 – Continue to Pay Through e-Pay Tax.
Step 4 – Enter your PAN, Confirm PAN and any Mobile number to receive OTP.
Step 5 – After OTP verification, you will be redirected to e-Pay Tax page. Click on Income Tax File.
Step 6 – Select AY (2023-24) and Type of payments as Other Receipts (500) and Continue.

The Aadhaar-PAN linking was free before June 30, 2023. After that Rs 1,000 will be charged.
Here are the steps to check if your Aadhaar card and PAN card are linked –
Step 1 – Click on ‘our services’ tab on the income tax portal
Step 2 – Click on ‘Link aadhaar’ card on the page
Step 3 – Fill your aadhaar card and PAN card numbers
Step 4 – A pop-up will appear showing the status of your cards
