Adaptive Filter

An adaptive digital filter automatically modifies its parameters in direct response to the input signal. Simply put, an adaptive filter attempts to optimise its performance in real-time by addressing changes in its signal environment. This property of adaptivity is of paramount importance in applications where the characteristics of input signals could change or may not have been known beforehand.

Mechanism of Operation

The operation of an adaptive filter comprises a feedback loop such that the filter updates its coefficients concerning an error signal. This error signal is computed from the difference between the desired output and the actual output of the filter. The primary means used in this update process are optimisation algorithms, typically Least Mean Squares (LMS) and Recursive Least Squares (RLS). The principal goal during adaptation is to minimise some price function, most often the mean square error (MSE), so that the output of the adaptive filter closely follows the desired signal.

Applications

Adaptive filters are used in practically all fields. For example, in medical monitoring, they can filter out the noise for ECG signals without damaging any part of the heartbeats. They give extra care to changing noise frequencies or follow them in tracking to attain cleaner and more precise readings. They are also used in communication systems to improve the quality of the signal in mobiles and other electronic equipment through interference reduction and improvement of clarity.
