Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) have become a popular tool for saving & investing on a regular interval for the long term. With SIPs, one can invest in the financial markets in a disciplined manner, without needing to closely navigate the market fluctuations. For, they get to invest in professionally managed funds, reducing the inherent risks of equity markets considerably. In this blog, we'll delve into the different types of SIPs available so that you can plan your investments wisely.

  • Different Types of SIPs

What is a SIP Investment Plan?

SIP is a short form for Systematic Investment Plan. It is a method of investing in mutual funds by regularly contributing a fixed amount of money at scheduled intervals, typically monthly. This approach promotes financial discipline and allows investors to enter the financial markets with ease, as it eliminates the need for upfront investment. One of the key advantages of SIPs is the concept of rupee cost averaging, where investors buy more units when prices are low and fewer units when prices are high. This strategy helps balance the impact of market volatility, potentially reducing the overall average cost of investment per unit over time. The investors also get to choose the amount they want to invest and the frequency of their contributions. This ease of accessibility makes SIPs an attractive option for a wide range of individuals, from beginners to experienced investors.

Further the funds you invest in via SIPs are professionally managed. In all, SIPs are ideal for long-term wealth creation as besides all the above benefits, it also helps you leverage the power of compounding and generate returns on both the principal amount and the accumulated earnings. Further adding to your ease, is the option to set up automatic debits from bank accounts, ensuring consistency in investment approach.

Different Types of SIPs

Regular SIP

In a regular SIP investors contribute a fixed amount at regular intervals, typically monthly. However, investors have an option to choose bimonthly, quarterly or half yearly or at any other interval as well. Regular SIPs provide a disciplined approach to investing, allowing investors to benefit by contributing small amounts at regular intervals. With a long term horizon, even small & consistent SIPs, one can yield good returns with the help of power of compounding and making most of market cycles using rupee cost averaging.

Top-up SIP

As the name suggests, top up SIP is suitable for Investors wishing to accelerate their SIP investments gradually. It is also called step up SIP and allows investors to increase their investment amount periodically, either at fixed intervals or based on certain predefined market conditions. For example, if you set a top up of Rs 500 on Rs 1000 SIP after a year, from 13 months onwards, your SIP amount will be Rs 1500. This strategy offers flexibility to investors to take advantage of market opportunities and boost their investment corpus as per convenience. It is also one of the best ways to increase your savings with time, as your income increases. Also, you get to save more in real time as inflation also rises with time.

Flexible SIP

For investors seeking adaptability in their investment approach, flexible SIPs allow them to vary the investment amount or SIP frequency. This type of SIP is ideal for individuals with irregular income or those who want the freedom to adjust their investment amount based on changing circumstances. However, one should keep in mind that the fund house should be communicated about the change at least one week prior the SIP due date.

Trigger SIP

Trigger SIPs add an element of automation by allowing investors to set predefined triggers based on market conditions. Investors can specify conditions under which additional investments are triggered, such as a specific market index level or a particular date. This type of SIP helps investors align their investments with market trends. This is best for investors who navigate market movements and are always on a look out to tap the opportunities.

Perpetual SIP

Perpetual SIPs are similar to regular SIPs but have no maturity date. Investors continue their investments, providing an option for long-term wealth creation without the need for constant renewal. Perpetual SIPs are suitable for investors with long-term investment horizons. The investor needs to request the stop as and when required.

Multi SIP

Diversification is a key strategy in investment, and multi SIPs allow investors to diversify their portfolio across different mutual fund schemes . Investors can allocate their SIP investments across various asset classes, fund managers, or investment strategies and spread risk and enhance potential returns. This SIP is a simple way for diversification. It allows a single transaction for portfolio diversification and risk reduction on the market related instruments.

SIP with Insurance

Combining the benefits of both investment and insurance, SIPs with insurance provide investors with a financial safety net. In addition to wealth creation through SIPs, these plans offer life insurance coverage, ensuring financial protection for the investor's family in case of unforeseen events. Only some AMCs offer such plans and the insurance feature has no bearing on the performance of your mutual fund scheme.

All in all, the world of SIPs offers a diverse range of investment strategies tailored to meet different financial goals and risk appetites. By understanding these types of SIPs, you can craft a personalized investment approach that aligns with your financial objectives. Happy investing!
